Unable to download app from play store

Never in all my years using Android have we encounter a problem w/store this bad (other day took nearly six hours to update 29 apps) nor are my other Android devices affected. Tried just about every trick in the book out there (besides a factory reset) w/none lasting longer than one or two app downloads, then it was back to square one.
